About the farm
For us, regenerative ranching is a mindset. It’s not a set protocol or a certification. It means farming in harmony with nature, with the goal of restoring degraded soils and enhancing habitat for wildlife as well as our livestock.
Our farm has no facilities, but if you’re prepared to get dirty and don’t mind some bugs, we’d love to show you the land! Reach out to us at clint@habitatranch.com and we can try and schedule a visit!
We move our cows daily or every other day. This allows the land to rest, prevents over-grazing, and distributes organic matter from the cow’s manure and urine.
We also keep our cows out of ponds, streams, and wetlands which prevents them from degrading the aquatic ecosystem and maintains water quality downstream.
Our future plans involve the removal of invasive plants, introducing fire to the landscape, and reintroducing native grasses and forbs.
All cows eat grass at some point in their life, however most of the beef produced in America comes from cows that start on grass but are then shipped to concentrated animal feed operations (CAFOs) where they spend the last third of their life eating grain. These are unnatural conditions for an animal to live in.
The terms “grass-finished” or “100% grass-fed” can also refer to cows who are not fed grain, but are still finished in a CAFO on hay/grass/silage.
Our cows spend 100% of their life on open pasture, eating a diet diverse in fresh forage and hay.
While we do not have an organic certification, we believe our beef goes beyond organic. Organic beef can still be fed grain and confined to a feedlot for part of their lives.
Like organic operations, we use no chemicals, antibiotics, or hormones on our cows or fields but our cows are on pasture and eat grass for 100% of their life.
About our cows
Our steers are on pasture for their entire life and only consume wild forage and hay as well as a balanced, free choice mineral.
Believe it or not, we use a biodegradable, non-toxic soap mixed into the steers’ water to de-worm them. It is called Shaklee Basic H and we believe that it is a much safer option compared to traditional de-wormers such as Ivermectin which the FDA requires a 48-day period between treatment and slaughter. Additionally, our cattle move daily to fresh pasture which significantly reduces the need for de-worming as compared to traditional continuous grazing.
